Advisors to the Segmented Woodturners

Jim Rodgers - Advisor to the Board

I want to communicate the beauty of wood in forms that allow the eye to focus on the wood. My interest is polychromatic segmented vessels and green wood hollow forms.

I use many woods native to the Western United States accented with tropical exotics and stabilized burls. I study the creations of many other artists working in wood, ceramic, and other media and adapt the most interesting ideas into my work.

Ideas grow from my students and workshop participants who inspire me to new forms and designs. While I learned woodturning from respected local and international artists, I am mostly self taught.

I devote full time to turning, demonstration and teaching. I am the lead wood turning instructor for the MT Diablo Unified School District's wood turning program where I teach several semester-length turning courses. I also coach wood turning at the high school level in the Acalanes School District and offer one-day courses at Woodcraft of Dublin.

I am a member of the Bay Area Woodturners Association, Diablo Woodworkers, The American Craft Council, The American Association of Woodturners, and the Martinez Art Association.

Wayne MillerAdvisor to the Board

I am an electronic engineer by education. I spent my early work life building and launching rocket payloads as a civilian contractor (Rocket Scientist) for the US Air force. I spent 25 years as a technical sales manager for a variety of companies mostly in the high tech and semiconductor areas. I finished my career as a business consultant training managers in the ways of maintaining client relationships and using software to accomplish this. I have spent many years as a volunteer in nonprofit organizations. I specialize in training adults in leadership techniques, training methods, and presentation skills.

Since retiring 10 years ago I have transitioned my woodworking hobby from furniture making to specializing in turning. I am hooked on segmenting largely because I don’t like to color wood. I am attracted to the beauty of the grain as it appears naturally. Segmenting allows me to do this and still create designs by using different species.

I am presently serving as the Equipment Manager of my local AAW chapter. I serve as a moderator of our Forum and I regularly contribute to the Forum. I organize our Holiday Exchange each year. I believe that I have the skills and desire to help this organization continue to be the vibrant entity that it has become.
