President's Message

Welcome to the Segmented Woodturners, an online chapter of the American Association of Woodturners, founded in 2009. Our community of more than 500 members is dedicated to advancing segmented woodturning through education, inspiration, and the exchange of ideas.

We strive to be the premier international organization supporting both the art and craft of segmented turning—for everyone from beginners to experienced studio artists. Our membership includes a rich mix of skill levels and creative perspectives.

Our mission is to provide a first-class online experience, including:

• A forum for asking questions and sharing techniques
• An extensive members’ gallery showcasing thousands of segmented pieces
• A growing archive of resources designed to inspire and educate

Leopard Wood Segmented Kaleidoscope

Leopard Wood, Wenge, Yellowheart. 2” diameter 12” long . My friend Dennis Reed has developed these Kaleidoscope’s methods over the past few years and was kind enough to share his expertise. Being a died in the wool segmenter I decided to make the wood elements from segmented glue ups rather than solid wood stock. The mirrors and lenses, are all hand cut glass. We used a 50 mm steel bearing to afford smooth operation. The trinket box is filled with colored glass beads and shards of colored glass. It was a fun change from vases and closed vessels.

Lloyd Johnson said "The planning that went into this piece is evident in its beauty and functionality - especially the bearing that makes using the scope smooth and easy. The wood used is exceptional; the species' colors are very complementary. It's a beautiful piece, Jess, and I'm pleased to select it as the Photo of the Week."

Meet the Demonstrator

Steve Bonny

Steve has been a segmenter for nearly 15 years and has proven to be highly creative and never afraid to tackle new techniques. He is an active member of the chapter, and you will regularly see him sharing his ideas in both the gallery and the forum.

Steve has also served as a board member for several years and currently holds the position of chapter vice president.

At this year’s symposium, Steve will share two of his signature techniques: Thin-walled Stave Construction and Two-layer and Sacrificial-layer turnings.

1. The 8th Segmenting Symposium has been scheduled for September 18-20, 2026. Registration will open in early February.

2. The March Technical Guide has been posted. It is on Using Veneers. Members can find it in Resources under the Technical Guides Category.
