Bio

Having been a long-time woodworker, I bought my first lathe 30 years ago for the sole purpose of making a segmented bowl. There was no interest in segmenting and nowhere to turn for help. I decided to change that.
Becoming a self-taught programmer and four software programs later, I have helped to grow the segmenting community to the point that nearly 50% of woodturners are creating segmented vessels and segmented art in ways that I never dreamed possible. I call that a good start and am anxious to use technology to help drive it to an even higher level.

  • Introduction to Multi-Generation Laminations (MGL) - Cut a laminated board into strips, glue them together into a chevron pattern and you have made your first MGL. Simple. Except it does not look like you wanted it to look. It is the wrong size, the joints do not line up and it is now in your trash can.
This rotation will cover the basics of design, cutting and gluing to make the perfect chevron (1st generation MGL).
The fun begins with taking that chevron and converting it into diamonds, SW designs, thunderbirds, etc. that looks exactly as you intended and is the perfect size for your project.
  • Advanced topics using Multi-Generation Laminations (MGL) - Once you have mastered the chevron board, a whole new world of challenges and opportunities await you. With simple techniques, you will be making amazing segmented vessels and art in ways you never thought possible. While this is not difficult, it is not intuitive and getting help with mastering the learning curve will save you a lot of time and frustration.
I will cover solutions such as lasers, positioning systems, jigs gluing and alignment techniques to make the finished result look exactly as you intended. I will share ideas that I have come to know having worked with MGL for the past 20 years
