Bio
Tom has focused on segmented woodturning for the last 15 years and has created wooden bowls and vases from a variety of exotic woods. He draws inspiration for his projects from Hopi and Navajo art and African baskets. Now retired from a career as an engineer, he brings this expertise to the world of segmented woodturning. In addition to creating wood turned gifts for family and friends, Tom enjoys donating items to favorite charities for raffles and auctions. While Tom's passion is segmented woodturning, he thoroughly enjoys teaching what he has learned with others. Tom has led segmented woodturning workshops at MASW for the last 5 years and demonstrated at all the Segmented Symposiums since 2014. He also demonstrated at the 2018 AAW Symposium in Portland, Oregon, and was a lead demonstrator at the 2023 Southwest Association of Turners (SWAT). His work has been featured by the AAW and the Segmented Woodturning Chapter of which he is a member.

- Segmented Turning Using A Gluing Jig - This demonstration will detail procedures to build both small and large closed segmented vessels from 48 to 288 segments per row using a glue up jig. Tom will discuss specific techniques that can be used when building very small or very large vessels. Also demonstrated will be ways to make a large project from 2 or 3 parts which are then glued together and ways to increase precision and reduce waste. Also included will be the use of design software to go beyond simple patterns to create vessels that have better form as well as patterns.
- Steps to Create a Beautiful Design - We will focus on design in this demonstration for both segmented and bowl from a board projects. We will first look at various sources to find inspiration. Next, we will learn how to create patterns and choose the best form and wood for the selected pattern. We will then investigate form and its constructability, along with tips to build challenging forms. Project size selection based on form, pattern, and constructability will be covered in addition to various styles of segmented wood turning and the design and build of selected feature rings. Finally, we will cover the use of computer-based design tools.
- Using Technology in Segmenting - If you are curious how CNC, Laser Machines, or 3D printers work, then this demonstration is for you. For each technology we will detail the steps required to produce what is needed to create a final product. We will look at software use, tool selection, graphics, and details to be successful. This demonstration will provide examples of how to use a CNC, Laser Machine, and 3D printers to enhance your final vessel and will provide examples of projects that include the three technologies.
