Working with wood has been a lifelong pursuit which started at a very young age when my Dad, who owned a custom cabinet business, taught me to appreciate the beauty and flexibility of wood as a design medium while I learned the fundamentals of cabinet construction and safely using woodworking tools. This interest in woodworking continued into adulthood with a focus on furniture design as a part time passion while I paid the bills as an engineering manager. After over 30 years of making furniture, I discovered a new avenue for artistic expression through woodturning. Combining my interest in precision woodworking with my analytical skills from engineering, and my newly found interest in woodturning has created a perfect storm that resulted in a fascination with segmented design. In recent years, my interest in natural forms and textures is transforming my design approach by combining classical segmented construction with carving, pyrography, and painting to create unique organic forms. Sharing this interest with others brings additional rewards

Bowl from a board basics to fascinating - The bowl-from-a board (BFB) technique has been around for centuries and has been a very simple and cost-effective technique to make a functional bowl. During the last 30 years, this concept has been expanded in many directions to create fascinating works of art. This rotation will cover the basics steps to layout and assemble this style of bowl. We will then discuss through photos and video clips, all the process to make more artistic designs. Finally, the rotation will proceed to survey the many approaches used by contemporary artists to add artistic interest and complexity to the technique. You will leave inspired to give this technique a try.

Building a segmented vase from A to Z - Segmentation is a fascinating approach that allows you to create unique and sometimes complex designs by efficiently using wood from around the world to create designs using the natural color of wood. This session will cover the techniques required to get started in segmenting and will proceed to show a number of intermediate techniques. Using video clips, the process for making a small, segmented vase will be covered. Topics will include layout, ring construction, making a vase in multiple sections, feature rings, thin rings, and more. After this session you will be ready to tackle a segmented design.
This will be an in person version of the rotation done during the AAW virtual symposium in 2021.
