President's Message

Welcome to the website of the Segmented Woodturners, a chapter of the American association of woodturners that is dedicated to the education and sharing of information between its 600 members. Our membership consists of people from beginning segmenters to studio artists. Everyone is welcome to join our open and friendly community.
With the help of some great board members, we have lots in store for the next year
If you like what you see, you can begin your membership and get full access to our 10+ year library of information consisting of a gallery of photos and a forum where members questions are answered, information is shared, and project design details are posted.

I encourage you to read my blog post to learn more about what we have in store for you.

Photo of The Week

Chestnut and walnut container This container is 11-1/2" diameter by 11-1/2" tall. Maybe you can't tell from the photo but the lower 2/3rds of the container are spherical. I bought the chestnut at Cook Woods. I had been looking for a nice chestnut for years. All of the US chestnut forests died out from blight in the early 1900s. Only a few isolated chestnut trees remained. The crystal was purchased on eBay. BY: Kevin Neelley

Meet the Members

To become better acquainted with each other, this column will feature members of Segmented Woodturners.

This month's blogger is James G Allen -I graduated Cum Laude from Governors Academy. The yearbook says I was a brain in math 4. After attending Cornell University I was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent 2 years in Straubing, Germany with the 11th Armored Cavalry as an officers clerk.

Member Spring Challenge

Let’s kick off the New Year with a segmenting challenge to get you in your shop.  We will keep the topic simple so that everyone can participate.  The challenge is “Feature RingsIt’s a great opportunity to try a new one you have been thinking about.  The rules are simple.  Make a piece that contains a feature ring and post it in the gallery by April 30, 2019.  Your description must include the words “Spring Challenge” so we know to include it.  Your feature ring can contain alternate materials or unique techniques so feel free to be creative.  All members that submit a photo will be placed into a drawing to win a $50 gift certificate from Craft Supplies.  Whether you are new to segmenting or a veteran, you have an equal chance to win.  Let’s see how many interesting patterns our 600 members can create.

Committees

The board is asking for member help by creating a couple of committees to help collect information and make recommendations to the board:

Symposium group
                Site recommendation

                Programs
                Instant Gallery
                Ideas for improvement
                Content recommendations
                Additional requests from the board

Forum & Website content
                Recommendations for website changes

                Information for Blog posts
                Recommendations to improve member involvement
                Recommendations to boost membership
                Additional requests from the board
                Additional requests from the webmaster
Videos for posting on our YouTube Channel
Help with Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube promotion, postings and improvements

Anyone interested in precipitating in one or more of these committees please send your name, email and phone number to bob_beaupre@segmentetedwoodturners.org
