President's Message

Welcome to the website of the Segmented Woodturners, a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners that was formed in 2009. Our on-line chapter is dedicated to segmenting education and the sharing of information between its 500 members. We are always striving to remain the premier international organization advancing both the art and craft of segmented woodturning for all skill levels from beginner to studio artist and we have a good mix of experience levels. Our mission is to provide a 1st class website, a forum for asking questions and sharing information, and a gallery of members artwork with an archive of 1000’s of pieces and growing to inspire you. You can learn more about what the chapter has to offer by visiting the “About” page at the top of the screen. I hope you will take advantage of our free 3 day trial so you can see our content. Double Celtic Knot #1
By Doug Drury

During my Celtic Knot demo I was asked if I had ever done a double knot on a pen like the rolling pin I showed. I replied that I didn't think there would be enough room on a pen, but then I got thinking, why not one knot on top of another? Here is pen #1 of that design. Padauk, Dynawood, Maple and Walnut. Starting by preparing two blanks the same size, one of Padauk and one of Dynawood. First knot was cut at 22.5 degrees off 90, swapping the tops of each blank when the insert was glued This created the larger knot with the insertion of the other blank's wood. Second knot was cut at 45 degrees off 90, no swapping of the tops. Pen kit is a Sierra from Lee Valley. Finish is Glue Boost after being sanded to 1,000. Then Glue Boost wet sanded to 12,000 followed by Zona Paper, EEE abrasive grit and wax, Huts Plastic Polish buffed at 3,500 RPM.
